The company sent us some samples of their C4 Performance Energy Drink line for review. Here are how 7 of the 10 flavor options fair.
C4 Energy Drink Review
C4 has been around for a long time and initially, it was available as a powdered drink mix. Because of the rise in popularity of "workout oriented energy drinks", C4 expanded its offerings to more ready-to-drink options.
C4 Taste
One thing all the fitness marketed energy drinks have in common is their bold flavor offerings. C4 Energy is no different. It has a wide range of interesting and intense flavors. In general, they all are pretty bold and sweet but do a great job balancing the artificial sweeteners and covering up the energy supplement flavor.
Purple Frost: If you like grape soda, you'll be a fan of this one. A bold grape flavor that's easy to drink.
Strawberry Watermelon Ice: I think they nailed the strawberry and watermelon. A good flavor balance and nice carbonation.
Orange Slice: This is C4's version of orange soda and they got it right.
Frozen Bombsicle: The name doesn't give much away but I would describe this flavor as blue raspberry. This flavor is always interesting because what exactly is a blue raspberry?
Cotton Candy: They nailed the cotton candy flavor but I'm not a fan of cotton candy flavored drinks in general.
Twisted Limeade: This is C4's version of a lemon-lime soda. It's probably my favorite of the 7 since it's more in line with the flavors of soda I typically drink.
Midnight Cherry: If you like bold black cherry flavor then this one is for you. Good flavor and balance.
C4 Energy Ingredients
There are a couple of things that set C4 apart from some of the other players in this category.
- Carnosyn®: a patented formula of beta-alanine.
- Betapower®: a natural form of betaine derived from beets.
Beyond that, it's pretty simple. Caffeine, niacin, and B12.
C4 Energy Drink Effect
I definitely experienced a nice lift from C4 as well as the tingling sensation that the can told me to expect from the beta-alanine. This lift was a little more than I get from my usual double shot espresso.
I do like that C4 Performance Energy Drink has just 200 mg of caffeine in their standard energy drink. This is lower than some of the other players in this segment that start out at 300 mg, which is 100 mg more than the safe single dose of caffeine recommended by leading health agencies around the world. C4 does offer 300 mg varieties but their most common offering is 200 mg.
Overall, C4 Performance Energy Drink is a solid product offering for the consumer who likes the sports and fitness type of energy drink. I could see this crossing over to the general energy drink consumer as well because of C4's variety of flavors and more moderate caffeine levels.
