Coffee (Moka Pot)

Moka pot (also called Stovetop espresso) is technically not an espresso coffee due to its low pressure brewing process.
A typical moka pot espresso cup is 50 mls (made from 60 mls / 2 fl oz of water —some is lost to steam).
The caffeine amounts listed are from taking an average of three tests with different brew sizes, but then normalizing them to a single 50 ml serve.
This average amount is 93 mg per 50 ml serve (2 fl. oz).
While there are few studies on Moka Pot caffeine, one of the best shows that a longer brew time leads to more caffeine. Essentially, if you are brewing a multicup pot, you will brew for longer, therefore leading to more caffeine in the output (per cup).
Like all coffees, caffeine (and flavor) depends on the blend, bean source, grind size, and brew time.
Brewing Process
- Water is placed in the lower chamber of the moka pot.
- Finely ground coffee is added to the filter basket.
- As heat is applied, steam pressure forces hot water through the coffee grounds.
- Brewed coffee collects in the upper chamber.
Brewing Factors Affecting Caffeine Content
• Grind Size: Fine grind (but not as fine as espresso) is optimal for extraction.
• Coffee-to-Water Ratio: Typically, a 1:7 ratio (grams of coffee to water volume) is used.
• Brewing Time: About 3-5 minutes; longer brewing can extract more caffeine.
• Water Temperature: Around 90-95°C (194-203°F) for optimal extraction.
• Pressure: Operates at 1-2 bars of pressure, significantly lower than espresso machines (which use 9 bars).
