Outlast Energy
Outlast Energy is a 12-ounce canned energy drink built around Deura9, a patented, deuterium-modified form of caffeine developed by d9 Designs, for which Outlast holds an exclusive license in the energy drink category.
Deuterium is a naturally occurring, stable isotope of hydrogen that has been used in multiple FDA-approved pharmaceuticals to slow how quickly a molecule is broken down by the body.
In Deura9, nine hydrogen atoms in the standard caffeine molecule are replaced with deuterium. This substitution exploits what is known as the Kinetic Isotope Effect, the heavier deuterium-carbon bond is more resistant to enzymatic cleavage in the liver, which substantially slows the rate at which the caffeine is metabolized.
The practical result is a significantly extended half-life.
In human trials, d9-caffeine remained at elevated blood levels for over 40 hours after a single dose, compared to the 8–10 hour window typical of standard caffeine — roughly a fourfold difference.

The company is careful to distinguish this from a time-release delivery mechanism; the caffeine itself is structurally different, not encapsulated or coated. The slower metabolic clearance means the energy curve flattens and extends rather than spiking and dropping, which the brand positions as eliminating the crash associated with conventional energy drinks.
The tradeoff is meaningful: because Deura9 remains active in the system for an extended period, consumption later in the day carries a greater potential to disrupt sleep than standard caffeine would.
