The Complete Guide to Starbucks Caffeine

starbucks caffeine
Starbucks has some of the highest caffeine amounts of any coffee chain.

These charts were compiled using data from Starbucks in-store leaflets, their website, and from independent laboratory tests.

Caffeine in coffee can vary (due to coffee bean origin and blend used) and may be more or less than the amounts shown.

Starbucks K-Cups

It is difficult to determine caffeine amounts per blend in Keurig K-Cups. However, Keurig claim that “specialty beverages containing tea, coffee, or chocolate may have up to 60mg per 8oz serving”.

How Many Shots?

The caffeine amounts of the espresso-based drinks show that a Tall Latte (and Cappuccino) has just a single shot of coffee. For a 12 oz cup size – this is quite weak and has considerably less caffeine than a brewed coffee of the same size.

Most conscientious coffee vendors serve at least a double-shot in drinks over 8 ounces. Most provide double-shots (by default) in regular takeaway cups. This is because many takeaway cups tend to have more volume than their china or crockery counterparts.

Tazo Tea Caffeine: Retail vs Outlet

The caffeine amounts for Tazo Brewed Tea are high.

Independent Lab tests have shown that Tazo Earl Grey has about 40-59mg caffeine (when brewed in 6oz water).

Tazo China Green Tips has 23-41mg caffeine. Apparently, Starbucks cafes use a different size teabag in-store compared to the retail packets (but we have been unable to confirm).

See more about caffeine in black tea here.

Tazo Replaced by Teavana

Starbucks has begun phasing out Tazo Tea and replacing it with Teavana after they acquired the brand last year. We’ve removed Tazo from our table above, but here they are for your reference.

How Accurate Are These Amounts?

Starbucks makes it clear that “caffeine information is approximate and is based on limited analytical data.” and also that “Values can vary greatly based on the variety of the coffee and the brewing equipment used.”

Here are a few independent tests that showed some discrepancies from what Starbucks lists.

A recent test conducted by BuzzFeed found Starbucks Brewed Coffee to average about 17 mg/ounce or 272 mg per 16 fluid ounces (Grande). This is about 60 mg less than what Starbucks reports.

One lab test sampled Starbucks Breakfast Blend brewed coffees. Caffeine varied from 299.5mg to 564.4mg per 16 fl oz (Grande) cup! The 6 samples were obtained from the same outlet on 6 consecutive days.

An interesting example: If you look at the brewed coffee varieties you would think that the blends that have more caffeine in the Grande size would also have more caffeine in the Short size. This isn’t always the case according to Starbuck’s data, but this would make sense logically.

Beware: Decaffeinated Drinks Still Contain Caffeine

Decaffeinated isn’t the same thing as caffeine-free.

An independent lab test of Starbucks coffee showed the following:

  • Decaf Brewed Coffee – 12.0–13.4 mg/16 fl oz serving (Starbucks have decided to list considerably more caffeine than this – 25mg per 16 fl oz).
  • Decaf Espresso – 3.0–15.8 mg/shot.
Look here to find out how many cups of Starbucks it would take for you to overdose.

  • Judy Snoody

Dang Judy, way to be silly and wasteful. A ~200mg dose is barely enough to get someone with any level of caffeine tolerance or dependency started. In fact, if I had drank that cup for you I probably wouldn’t have felt much at all…but the throw out a bag of perfectly good coffee just because you accidentally drank too much on one single occasion is just foolhardy.

  • Laura

I work at Starbucks, and our tea bags that we use have more loose tea in them than the retail bags. That’s why the caffeine content is more than usual.

  • alexander hamilton

Steve how many ventis did you drink before you wrote that one…lol jk…it was informtive

  • John

I know the feeling. I was a routine Rock star/Pre-Workout energy drinker taking up to 300mg of caffeine, no issues. Until one night prior to working out i drank one a bit too fast or on an empty stomach or something and got incredibly sick.

So much so that i actually went to the ER, i had uncontrollable shakes, dizziness and horrible stomach cramps. I tried everything to calm myself down(eating a bunch of food, taking a shower) but after an hour of this i just went in. It took over 4 hours to come down

Ever since then i am very conscious of how much caffeine i drink. Like you i never ever want to go through that again, i seriously thought i was dying…not even counting the $1k ER bill that came weeks later…

  • Rafael Lafuente P

i drink a gallon of very black coffee a day.. weaklings you make me laugh lol

  • Jim

Does the iced coffee listed above include the ice? At least 1/3 of the cup is usually ice which makes a big difference.

  • Yes, The above amounts are supposed to reflect the amounts in the drink as it is served to the customer

  • GDog

But Janey, all chocolate has caffeine in it. If you are allergic, you should look more into it as there are many naturally caffeinated foods.

  • estycki

They always use two tea bags when I buy tea. I complain that it’s too strong.

  • Cari

First hint at a very little understood fact. Caffeine does NOT give you energy. Caffeine is a Central Nervous System stimulant which lies to you making you think you have more energy, but gives you NOTHING!
Thus the crash. If you deal with the crash by drinking more caffeine, then the debt increases. I you feel tired, you need, rest, sleep, exercise, nutrients, etc., to replenish the supply, not a whip. Its like credit card spending. You get deeper and deeper in debt and feel worse and worse, and think you cannot manage without that caffeine, while your real energy supply becomes more and more depleted. So save that Frappuccino for when you are getting sleepy at the wheel.

  • Raiu

The blacker a coffee is (read: more roasted), the less caffeine it has in it. You drink a gallon of very weak coffee, caffeine wise. A cup of light coffee could have more caffeine than your gallon. I wouldn’t call other people weaklings under those circumstances.

  • The caffeine difference between a light roast and a dark roast isn’t that dramatic.

  • Matthew Tassone

i take 500mg of caffeine and still feel like shit…

  • Ted

It may be time for you to do a caffeine detox. https://www.caffeineinformer.com/my-caffeine-detox

  • Joe

hm, tall to grande for brewed coffee: 33% increase of volume, 27% increase of caffeine.

  • Ted

these amounts represent the average amount someone would expect to find. Starbucks tested each size several times and listed the average of each size. They didn’t just test a tall size and multiply for the other sizes. This is why there are differences.

  • TexasRob

Thank you for all the great information…very much appreciated!!
