Mushroom Coffee: The Best Blends to Choose

Mushroom coffee is a unique blend of traditional coffee beans and medicinal mushrooms.

Instead of replacing the coffee beans entirely, medicinal mushroom extracts (such as Reishi, Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, and Chaga) are combined.

The result is a drink that retains the familiar taste of coffee while infusing the potential health benefits of the mushrooms.

How much caffeine is in Mushroom Coffee?

Mushroom coffee has slightly less caffeine than normal coffee blends – simply because the addition of mushrooms means a smaller ratio of coffee.

Four sigmatic, for example, claim 50 mg of caffeine in a cup of instant coffee, and 100 mg of caffeine in a brewed coffee (made from ground coffee).

What are the health benefits?

Mushroom coffees make claim to a lot of health benefits:

  • Enhanced Cognitive Function
Lion’s Mane, often present in mushroom coffee, is believed to boost memory and concentration.
  • Immune System Support
Mushrooms like Chaga and Reishi are known for their immune-boosting properties, potentially offering resistance against illnesses.
  • Stress and Fatigue Reduction
Cordyceps and Reishi, common inclusions, may act as adaptogens, helping the body manage stress more effectively.
  • Improved Gut Health
Certain medicinal mushrooms can foster better digestion and promote a healthy gut flora.
  • Antioxidant Properties
Mushrooms, particularly Chaga, have potent antioxidant capabilities, which can combat free radicals in the body.
  • Lowered Acidity
Adding mushrooms can make the coffee less acidic, which might be gentler on the stomach and beneficial for those sensitive to traditional coffee.

Should I drink mushroom coffee?

If you already drink coffee, there is nothing lost in trying out some mushroom coffee. However, the health benefits may be negligible due to the small amounts of mushroom extract in the drink.

You would then have to be drinking a lot of coffee to obtain the health benefits of the mushrooms!

Check the caffeine level in the blends carefully. Some are actual ground coffee, others are blends.
