Starbucks Doubleshot Energy + Coffee Review

Starbucks Doubleshot Energy + CoffeeStarbucks has been hush-hush recently about their +Energy option you may or may not have already heard of.

In fact myself being one of the key caffeine fiend targets being marketed to, I can’t say I wasn’t a little surprised they weren’t knocking at my door trying to get me to buy the add-ins. Well what do you know, this morning (6am) I open my door to find a set of Starbucks’ newest knight in shining armor, Starbucks DoubleShot Energy + Coffee.

This review you’re about to read is a first-hand exclusive, these drinks were not on sale at the time of writing this, and sales are expected to start in the middle of June, patience is key.

Starbucks Doubleshot Energy + Coffee 21st Century Milk Man?

What a way to start the morning! “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers instantly popped into my head, childhood memories of Folgers commercials burning in mind, and a realization that the former concept of having a Milk Man deliver milk every morning comes nowhere close to fresh delivered cans of extra caffeinated coffee.

*Crack* goes the tab, pressure furiously releasing from the Energy Standard 15oz. can, condensation dripping down the side, is this all just a dream? Starbucks with its Robber Baron style can’t possible create something that gets me excited again can it? Snap out of it, there’s no holding back now, swish gulp and down the hatch.

That’s What We Call “Variety”

The three flavors so far are Vanilla, Coffee, and Mocha. All three have similar yet distinct flavors despite me being somewhat unconfident if I were to be given a blind taste test. One thing I will tell you is that the Coffee flavor tends to taste the least sugary as well as being the only one to actually resemble coffee.

Mocha has a light aftertaste of coffee but it tastes more like a single pump of coffee syrup was added to a Yoo-hoo Chocolate Drink.

The Vanilla comes in second to the Coffee and my guess is it’s supposed to capture the White Chocolate Mocha lovers out there, not the serious coffee drinkers. All three flavors had a mild but present bitterness that was only sometimes noticeable, I figure this is due to ginseng and guarana. Other than that I was actually quite surprised by the taste of these drinks, I’d be hard pressed to tell much of a difference between the pre-existing bottled coffees sold by Starbucks and these new ones, except for one minor detail.

Even Coffee Needs a Pick-Me-Up

The ingredients on these cans are nothing short of amazing, for a coffee at least. Per 15 fl oz. there is 1800mg of Taurine, 450mg of L-Carnitine, 180mg of Inositol (also known as B8), 325mg of Ginseng, and 90mg of Guarana. In fact that list is quite good for any energy drink, often times the amount of ginseng is negligable and guarana (which works better than caffeine anhydrous) is forgotten, this drink spared neither.

Considering these drinks carry the Trademark of Doubleshot I would expect that these new ingredients would be added to a pre-existing doubleshot mix. Already containing 150mg of caffeine (from the Doubleshot) we’re looking at a good 225mg of caffeine per can. UPDATE Contains 146mg per 15 ounce can. Morning is bearable again!

In light of the above information, you should be confident in guessing the effects were substantial. In fact, better than even I would’ve guessed. A small but noticeable buzz, minor shaking but stable enough not to interfere with work, in all a good experience that woke me up smoothly and transitioned into a “Lovely Day”.

Starbucks Doubleshot Energy + Coffee is a Winner

Sometimes companies just get things right, and Starbucks has certainly achieved something in my mind. One thing that amused me was Starbucks’ marketing techniques claiming, “Wake up with Starbucks Doubleshot, Stay up with new Starbucks Doubleshot Energy + Coffee”. I’ve tried Doubleshots for the morning and honestly I get more of a buzz off of water. Doubleshot Energy +Coffee is up more in the level I need for the morning. Not too much caffeine, and not only caffeine as the main ingredient.

If you don’t have time to wait in line for a handmade drink, or to home-brew your own coffee, keep your eye out for this Doubleshot Energy trio in local Starbucks stores, 7-11, and grocery stores this June. MSRP is USD $2.59 per can and they come as singles, 4 packs, and 12 packs.

NOW available on-line from Amazon.

I thought it was kind of gross. I couldn’t even drink the whole thing. I ended up dumping it out.

This drink Rocks!! I should be on their payroll for the number of folks that I have gotten to try it.

Disgusting coffee drink. A conglomeration of sour milk, corn syrup, sugar, and natural chemicals, which set off a bad reaction, as well as nasty taste. Expect a headache, unless you have a tolerance for cheap junk products. The original doubleshot, however, is palatable,i guess because it is 9.5 oz less for the same price.

  • Anon

Drinking half of the Mocha gave me a headache.

  • Anon

    Ugh, I don’t feel well.

  • Coffee Junkie

    you bunch of pansies…

“whine whine taste bad whine whine headache whine whine bad reaction whine whine too strong whine whine”

I spend $5 every morning on two of the Coffee flavored Doubleshots. They are both down the hatch in less than a minute and a half. They wake me up, taste pretty good and I don’t get a sugar crash afterwards. Cocaine in a can. I love it.

OMG, I am totally addicted to these! I never knew caffeine was so addictive! Now I HAVE to have one everyday before I leave for work and sometimes I go back in the middle/late day to have another. My Mother keeps warning me about the bad effects of these caffeine drinks and I just ignore her! I’d like to drop this expensive habit but I just can’t do it! I don’t see a change in my behavior or anything strange. I don’t know why she is being such a freak! Does anyone know places where they sell packs of this for cheap? I can just find here (Chicago area) in single cans. They sell for $2.39, $2.49, or as much as $2.89. The cheapest I’ve seen them is for $1.99 a can on sale at the grocery store. Any other sources?? Thanks-

  • Lorraine

I tried the Starbucks Mocha double shot + energy and it is awesome- I am hooked. The next day I couldn’t find it as I was away camping and the only thing the country store had was Rockstar coffee + energy so I tried it. Wasn’t fussy about it. Will wait for the Starbucks next time. It is worth the $2.49.

So far I’ve only tried the vanilla, and didn’t particularly like it. Instead of having a warm vanilla undertone it was quite overpowering which tasted like a cheap vanilla liquor. To state it simply, I’m not impressed. Going to drink a mocha tomorrow, I’ll tell you guys how it goes.

  • I drank this stuff a week ago, it’s soooo sweet!

  • Okay This drink Sucks Energy Yes Headache Stomache ache SUCKS

  • christine

I love the old ones that have less sugar…these new ones u have are way to much sugar …

  • BESTSTUFFEVER

I bought 8 of these and passed then out to my co-workers at a busy and HUGE serving job (sports arena). Most of my servers got one, and I made sure to give them to my runners. What follows is an inside joke that I think speaks well of this product:

IF YOU NEED ME JUST CALL ME, JUST CALL ME WITH YOUR BRAIN. DID YOU CALL ME? MY BRAIN WAS RINGING, AND THERE WAS NO MESSAGE. NEXT TIME YOU CALL ME, LEAVE A MESSAGE. DID YOU NEED SOMETHING? HOW ARE YOU? I’M SUPER!!! THANKS FOR ASKING!! I’M SO SUPER, I CAN’T EVEN BELIEVE YOU’RE ASKING!! DID YOU NEED ME TO COUNT SOMETHING? I CAN COUNT SO HIGH, SEE WATCH ME. 123… THREE… OMG, LET’S GO RUN BASES, THERE’S THREE BASES, LET’S GO. OH, HOLD ON, MY OTHER LINE IS RINGING…

At one point I instructed a co-worker that if he found me on the floor babbling incoherently,he should just put me back on my feet and point me in the right direction. The Energizer bunny has NOTHING on this stuff.

I will be procuring at least three cases for us to enjoy during our super busy days. I’ll just need to pin a note to myself with an emergency contact phone number and medical info, so when they find me stroked out on the floor next to an empty can, they’ll know what happened.

Uh, I’m personally a big starbucks and coffee fan so I figured “Why not?” and bought one. Tastes pretty good, but I ended up with a migraine, so dizzy I couldn’t even walk the rest of the way home, and throwing up. Who knows why, maybe I should’ve had something more to eat with this but all I can say is I won’t be having one for a long time

  • sadi

They have a new one, its white chocolate. I am addicted to the coffee one lol.. but did any one notice that the old ones had only 110 calories now the new ones have 210 calories??? everything has doubled. i wonder why. and what do they put in these drinks that are so addictive?

  • Chromi

I’ve always hated energy drinks, but the java monsters and coffee flavors were good. Two days ago I had one from a vending machine before class so i don’t pass out and fell in LOVE with it! I hope it’s not too bad for me since it’s my second one in 3 days. I was tempted to get one yesterday but I resisted lol.

  • Cheryl Meadows

I love the double shot white choc. Gives me that extra boost I need. Taste great and “NO” headaches or stomach upset. I will definatly keep buying.

  • Elaine Bodkins

I love the doubleshot drinks. White chocolate and vanilla are my favorite. The only place in Jackson, Tn that sales the product that I know of is Wal-Mart. Kroger had been carrying them but stopped for some reason. Not sure if Target carries them or not. I didn’t think to check the Starbucks store. That place is always so busy it’s hard to get in and out of just to check. The price at Wal-Mart is $2.79. I haven’t sen any 4 packs just singles. Something is wrong with my printer and I can only get e-mails on my i-phone so I can’t print any coupons. I rally love this product. Can’t wait till June…just hope more stores will be carrying it.
