What’s Wrong with Being Addicted to Caffeine?

squirril-addictGenerally speaking, there is no right or wrong answer here, but instead, it greatly depends on the individual.

If caffeine is interfering with your ability to lead a productive and well-adjusted life, then cutting back may be in order.

May all be some good reasons to evaluate your addiction to the substance.

Also, if your health is being affected due to a caffeine allergy or underlying heart condition then caffeine may need to be eliminated from your diet.

On the other hand, if caffeine isn’t being abused, you enjoy it, and it helps you be productive there probably isn’t any reason to not enjoy it.

If you have to be addicted to something, I guess there are far worse addictions out there than caffeine addiction.

  • Definitely sounds like you would benefit from scaling back on your caffeine consumption. Also scaling back on soda is a good idea since it is so acidic.

I drink 3-5 coffees a day depending on the day. Sometimes I drink 1-2 coffees. Sometimes a v can is enough for the day and sometimes it doesn’t touch the sides. Waking up is always the hardest and is when I need a coffee the most.

  • You can do better

Your ignorance of chemistry is truly dizzying.

    1) Alcohol does not equal or almost equal sugar. Just because different things have the same elements does not mean they are anything alike. As a so called carbon-based life form i esteem you higher than soot mixed with water, which with reasonable effort could be mixed to about the same elemental content as yourself. Some organisms can eat sugar and crap out alcohol though.

    2) Cocaine does not equal or almost equal Caffeine. Procaine, Novocaine, Novocaine almost equal Cocaine. Almost as in they have similar functional groups (“functional group” being a term from organic chemistry). In the “Caine” family Cocaine had some numbing effect and high toxicity and as new family members were created they had less toxicity and better numbing effects making them safer for medical use. I have never thought of Caffiene as having any numbing effects though it may have some toxicity.

    3) Does Caffeine make you crave sugar, that is entirely possible but still subject to further verification. i suspect that as a stimulated body burns energy the body regulates and seeks to replenish that energy, sugar being a good quick way to do this.

    4) You may be tight about sugar rotting your gut but further verification is required. Chalk this is up as a maybe.

    5) Sugar does not hurt your teeth. Sugar feeds the micro-organisms that crap out acid that dissolve your teeth. Also, acid is why i never drink coke, it has phosphoric acid as an ingredient which directly attacks teeth. Because of this it is also good at cleaning corroded battery terminals in your car.

    6) Your last paragraph (about too much caffeine, too much sugar, too much alcohol, too much fizzy stuff) is exactly correct and why i don’t pass you off as a total nut-job. You conclusion is correct even if your chemistry in the middle is incorrect. Fix your supporting chemistry and such and you have a more compelling stance.

I’m addicted to Pepsi I stopped drinking it last month cause it started to make me sick and I started getting headaches and my anxiety/panic attacks started up. And I also cut back to one cup of dark roast coffee.. So I’ll admit I’m addicted to caffeine. so my question is it’s been a month and I’m still feeling the withdrawal is it cause I’m drinking the coffee?

  • Amanda Mullin

I drank 1-2 cups of coffee a day plus 4-5 cans of Pepsi during the day (I can finish a full pack of 24 cans in less than 3 days….sadly) and if I’m at work I drink a one litre of Pepsi so I am a caffeine monster lol I unfortunately stopped drinking Pepsi cold turkey 0.o and I only drink one cup of dark roast coffee a day and I do drink Camille tea at night, I’m going on a month and I’m still having symptoms! Any ideas on what I Might be doing wrong?

  • Ted

I think your case is complicated by all the sugar you were drinking daily. I would schedule a check-up with your doctor and get your blood levels checked.

  • Aaron

I initially bought caffeine pills to help me curb appetite, but I took a few at one time to help me write a 6 page essay and then I took a few more the next night because I studied all night for a test. I had such a terrible headache the next day, but it was just me crashing. A few weeks later I had to stay up late again and I took more caffeine pills and I liked how I felt alert so I’ve been taking more. Now it’s been weeks and I take about 6 200mg pills daily. If I stop, I get terrible headaches and feel sick and irritable.

  • Ted

Could you try weaning yourself off gradually? 5 then 4, then 3 a day and so on? You could also scale down by half a pill each day for even less of a withdrawal.

  • Mr. Han
